The 10 Core Neutral Pieces You Need for Your Professional Capsule Wardrobe

The 10 Core Neutral Pieces You Need for Your Capsule Wardrobe

For anyone who takes their career seriously, they should take their professional wardrobe seriously as well.  I've chosen ten core neutral pieces that should be of the highest quality and last you for five to ten years of your professional career.  Purchase the highest quality that your budget can afford and take care of these pieces so they will last for the long haul.  Here you go!

A Black Blazer

It should be a simple high quality blazer that you can wear for several years.  Avoid a cheaper polyester blazer and spend the money on a great wool, or wool blend.  I'm suggesting black, because it's a neutral.

A Crisp White Button-Down

A long sleeve white button down should be crisp and fit nicely tucked in or out.  It should be very basic.

Black Pump

A basic black pump will last for years if you buy something very standard.  It should not be trendy, but should be more conservative.  If it’s a classic closed toe pump it will look good in any setting.

A Pair of Black Flats

These are equally as important as the black pump or blazer, if not more because you’ll probably wear these more than anything else.  When I say flats, I mean any dress shoe that is not a pump. These could be a pair of oxfords, loafers, mules, or of course, a basic flat dress shoe.  Choose what is best for your style of course, make sure they are made of the highest quality and will last.

A Black Trouser

A black trouser is an essential part of your professional wardrobe.  You'll need them for interviews, meetings or just basic office wear.

A Black Pencil Skirt

A pencil skirt is nice because it mixes up the pieces you already have that way you're not always wearing trousers.

A Black Sheath Dress

A sheath dress is a nice professional dress that you can wear with a multi-colored blazers, or all by itself.

High-quality blouses

An ivory or a light colored blouse is key to wear with every professional piece that you have in your wardrobe.  I would find a high quality material such as silk or cotton and avoid polyester.

A Black and White Striped Shirt

A casual striped shirt looks good with a blazer, it looks great with a denim jacket, and it looks good all by itself.  This is something I would consider because it’s multifunctional and can be worn casually or professionally.

A classic black handbag

Just like a quality shoe, you should have a classic high quality black handbag.  Just something basic, but the highest quality that your money can afford.

Are there any core neutral pieces that you think are essential for a professional wardrobe?  Let me know in the comments!
